Termination of a tenancy following the death of a tenant

This leaflet has been produced to advise people who are clearing a property following the death of the tenant.

Termination of a tenancy

Please notify the Association of the death of the tenant by contacting the Housing Officer as soon as possible. You will need to confirm in writing who the executor or next of kin is and supply a copy of the Death Certificate.

On the death of a tenant, a tenancy will be terminated on the Monday following receipt of keys at Aragon Housing Association offices.

Full rent is payable up to the date the tenancy is terminated.

Please be aware that housing benefit entitlement stops on the death of a tenant.

Clearing of properties

  • All floor coverings and furnishings should be removed, unless specific agreement has been made with the Association.
  • The property should be cleared of all items and rubbish. The Association is not able to offer a free rubbish removal service and therefore any costs incurred in removing any items which have been left in the property may be charged for.
  • Do not leave any open gas pipes or live wires. Always use a qualified or registered tradesman to remove appliances.

Agencies to notify

  • Gas, electricity and water companies will need to be informed following the death of a tenant. Telephone numbers can be found in the telephone directory. Meter readings should also be taken.
  • Mid Beds District Council will also need to be informed with regard to Council Tax and Housing Benefit. Telephone 01525 402051.

Returning keys

  • All keys to the property including any outbuildings or sheds should be returned to Aragon Housing Association’s offices – clearly labelled.
  • Any Lifeline Pendants should also be returned.

Death Certificate

  • Please remember to provide the Association with a copy of the death certificate either before or when you return the keys.

If you have any queries regarding the above please contact Aragon Housing Association on 01525 840505 where we will be pleased to give further advice.
