Aragon Housing Association, based in Bedfordshire, has won a Green Apple Environmental Award in the national campaign to find Britain's greenest companies.
It competed against more than 500 other nominations and will be presented with its Green Apple Award at a prestigious ceremony in the House of Commons .
Aragon, part of Grand Union Housing Group, was selected by a panel of judges after being nominated by one of its own residents, David West, for the work it does to promote green living to its tenants through a series of workshops and forums.
Steve Hill, Head of Customer Services and Resident Involvement for Aragon, said: “We are particularly delighted that it was one of our own customers who put us forward for this award, which is a genuine recognition of how hard our team works to promote energy efficiency and green living to our customers.”
Resident David West said: “I put Aragon forward as I was impressed at the way they encourage tenants to live in as green a way as possible. They staged a number of very interesting days when we looked at how we could all do our bit for the environment.”
As a result of this success Aragon has been invited to have its winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others around the world can follow their example and learn from their experience.
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country's major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries.
The awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, environmental group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.
Judges for the Green Apple Awards are drawn from the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
