SpeakIT Plus

This website is speech-enabled with a system called SpeakIT Plus, which means that you can choose for the website to be read aloud to you.This is done by using the "Listen To The Site" link at the top right of the website.

Speech-enabling our website provides an additional way of accessing our content for people who find it hard to read. This includes those with dyslexia or learning difficulties, those for whom English is not their first language, or anyone with a mild visual impairment. It is not designed to replace other screen readers.

Do I need to install any software? 

No, to just listen to the webpage being read to you, you do not have to download any special software.

Just click on the Play button on the toolbar.

How does it work?

The SpeakIT system reads the text directly on the page, it runs from the SpeakIT computer, this is why no software is needed for the website to be read aloud.

The following icons in the SpeakIT Pro menu bar are additional tools, if you wish to use them the software will need to be downloaded:

ScreenRuler

ScreenRuler is a line of text magnifier which allows part of the PC screen to be highlighted and magnified in a horizontal band.

Lightning Magnifier.

Lightning is a magnification software for the Windows PC. Whatever appears on the computer screen can be magnified up to 32 times. With Lightning you can magnify the entire screen or an area you choose, with a magnification strip or lens.

WebRead

WebRead is a web page reader for sighted users, once downloaded it can be used on any website.

Does it work on all pages?

Browsealoud will read every webpage on our site. It can also read some pdfs. If however you encounter a problem with reading a PDF file, you can use the Read Out Load option if you are using Adobe PDF Reader.

If you do not have Adobe PDF Reader you can download the latest version from the Adobe website.

Can I change the speed the website is read?

Yes. Once you have the toolbar at the top of the webpage you can click on the settings button.

Will it work on my Smartphone, Ipad or tablet?

Mobile platforms such as iOS, Andriod, Windows Mobile and Blackberry are supported which includes most modern tablets and smartphones. 

What operating system and Browser do I need on my computer?

SpeakIT Plus fully supports Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac and GNU/Linux operating  systems for its reading functions and has been extensively tested with the most popular web browsers.
