Moving allowance

What help is available?

Aragon offers financial assistance to some tenants who transfer or exchange to smaller accommodation.  This is a one-off payment depending on the number of bedrooms.  For each bedroom you are giving up Aragon pays £1,000.

If you need practical help with your move, for example arranging removals, Aragon can refer you to an appropriate support service.  If you are moving to a retirement scheme, the Home Support Officer at the scheme may be able to assist you.

Who is eligible for the payment?

Aragon tenants who:

• Move from an Aragon property to a smaller empty property with Aragon or another housing association or council when they bid on Bedfordshire Homefinder.
• Move by mutual exchange to a smaller property with Aragon’s written permission.  All exchange partners must move to appropriate size properties in accordance with benefit rules.

The payment is made to tenants who:

• Move to a smaller property because their housing related Benefit is reducing as they have spare bedroom(s).
• Move from a 2 bedroom property (not in a retirement scheme).
• Move to a retirement scheme.
• Move to more a more suitable home instead of having major adaptations carried out to their current home.

Who is not eligible for the payment?

Examples of when the payment will not be made include:

• Tenants or licencees of homeless accommodation who are offered a move to alternative property.
• Tenants who received a moving allowance payment or decant policy payment within the last 2 years.
• Sole tenants transferring from two or more separate properties to one vacant property.
• Tenants who hold a market or intermediate rent tenancy.

How much is the payment?

We pay £1,000 per bedroomyou are giving up.

Can the payment be reduced?

 Any money owed to Aragon is deducted from the payment.  Examples include:

• Rent arrears
• Repairs and damage the tenant is responsible for
• Removing items left in the property by the tenant
• Removing or making good unsatisfactory alterations the tenant has done.

Will rent free weeks be given?

 Aragon is unable to offer rent free weeks for a move.
