Aragon Housing Association has honoured some of its residents for outstanding work in their communities in its Star of Aragon Awards.

Held at Haynes Village Hall in Bedfordshire, the annual awards ceremony saw people picking up prizes in eight categories such as Best Community Project, Good Neighbour and Volunteer of the Year.

Henlow resident Alan Cordwell, 75, won this year’s Outstanding Contribution Award because he’s held in such high regard by his neighbours that he was nominated seven times across three different categories: Good Neighbour, Volunteer and Best Kept Area Awards.

Alan said: “I was so surprised to hear I’d been nominated for one award, never mind three! I enjoy doing jobs for others, it gets me out of the house and is a bit of exercise. I certainly wasn’t expecting any kind of reward, I don’t do it for that.

When I look at my award on the sideboard I confess I’m still a bit lost for words, but my family is very impressed and proud that I’ve won.”

Alan was nominated because he helps keeps his neighbours’ gardens neat and tidy by mowing the grass, weeding and keeping the area looking lovely and colourful. He also does odd jobs for his neighbours, gives them a lift if needed and helps at the local social group. Alan is described by his neighbours as a happy and caring man who never complains or brags.

Karen Nicholson, Grand Union Housing Group’s Community Investment Manager, said: “We recognise there are many residents who work tirelessly in their communities and go the extra mile to help others. Tonight is about honouring those achievements and saying ‘thank you’ to them.

Aragon offers more than just a roof over residents’ heads: residents can get involved by joining our stakeholder panels; we can help residents to get into work or improve their employment prospects; we can help those who want to be more digitally active; we can support younger residents with youth activities – the Community Investment Team has a lot to offer. The awards ceremony tonight is one way we can reward those residents who make their own important contribution.”

Prizes also included Best Kept Area, Young Person of the Year, Involved Customer of the Year and Personal Journey Award.
